The book chronicles many events and battles between the North and South during the Civil War around the Allison homestead in Tennessee. Near the end of the War, young Clay left the Confederate army battlefield, totally disillusioned with the fighting, the war, the killing, and what he thought was a right cause, and headed for the wild Texas plains intent on rounding up free roaming cattle and starting a cattle ranch of his own.

He acquired some cattle and headed north into northern New Mexico, where friends and family had already established cattle ranches in Colfax County on the already famous Maxwell Land Grant. He carved out a homestead at a place along the Canadian River at a place called Tenaja Creek. From there, he spent a great deal of time in the wild west town of Cimarron, just 20 miles southwest of his spread and spent considerable time in the saloons and places where desperados of that time hung out.

By necessity, he became a feared gunfighter and a prominent character in the war that followed between the Maxwell Land Grant faction and the local gold miners, farmers, settlers and others who had illegally laid claim to lands on the Grant.

Clay became famous for his exploits, gunfights and murders throughout the region. The book details the many false tales that were made up about him for the purpose of selling books and newspapers, and sets the record straight with regard to his real life story, which is exciting and amazing in itself! The book is a carefully researched book told in the authors writing style. The book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to know the history of the Colfax County War and the wild west in the mid to late 1800s.
